Description
A substantial silver tetradrachm struck in the name and types of Alexander III the Great, one of the most recognizable coin designs of the ancient Greek world.
Obverse: Head of Herakles (Hercules) facing right, wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, its characteristic paws tied around his neck. The portrait is powerfully rendered in high relief, with a prominent brow, deeply defined eye and strong facial features. Herakles, the greatest hero of Greek mythology, was closely associated with the Macedonian royal dynasty, which claimed descent from him.
Reverse: Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, seated left upon a throne. He holds an eagle in his extended right hand and a long scepter in his left. The royal inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (ALEXANDROU) identifies the coin as being issued “of Alexander.” Symbols and/or monograms in the field and beneath the throne served as administrative and mint controls and can be important in determining the precise mint and date.
The tetradrachm was one of the principal silver denominations of Alexander’s empire. Alexander’s coinage circulated across an enormous territory, and his Herakles-and-Zeus design became so influential that it continued to be struck by successor authorities after his death in 323 B.C. The British Museum notes that Alexander-type silver tetradrachms were produced both during and after his reign.
