Description
An exceptional pair of massive silver bracelets of hollow construction, each formed as a broad circular hoop terminating in large triangular hinged closure plates. The exterior is richly decorated with alternating ribbed bands and finely engraved arabesque and foliate motifs, while the triangular terminals are densely covered with minute punched decoration. Applied silver bosses and long fastening pins with spherical finials complete the elaborate closure mechanism.
The bracelets demonstrate sophisticated medieval Islamic silversmithing, combining repoussé, engraving, punching and applied elements to produce substantial jewelry of considerable visual presence while maintaining a hollow construction.
The form and decorative vocabulary are characteristic of Fatimid-period jewelry of the 10th–12th centuries, with closely related silver bracelets known from archaeological discoveries in the Holy Land, including Jerusalem and Caesarea. Such finds demonstrate the popularity of elaborate silver personal ornaments among prosperous communities of the Fatimid Eastern Mediterranean.
The pair survives with its original hinged fastening systems and retains extensive ancient surface patination and signs of burial, with localized ancient damage to one bracelet.
