At first glance, this piece is both mysterious yet familiar. Its mythical eyes and face are almost bird-like, yet the hair and necklaces are distinctly human, all set upon a monolithic body. This figurine is a Syro-Hittite “Pillar Figurine”, a form of statuary made in tribute to these ancient culture’s gods and goddesses, dating from approximately 2750 B.C.E. – 1900 B.C.E.
These figurines are found throughout the region, yet few are of this high quality. Many contain unique features, such as the jewelry and crown that adorn this piece. The hair and necklaces show extremely fine markings to give this figurine a rudimentary form of realism through texture. As ancient as this object is, it is in excellent condition and has been professionally restored to reveal its wonder.
