Gorgeous bronze statuette of a sea nymph riding a ketos. In Greek mythology the sea nymphs were collectively known as nereids, daughters of the old sea god known as Nereus. The nymph rides the horse-like water creature with a hand to her forehead, scanning the horizon. She wears a small tunic around her waist and her legs are spread slightly apart for balance.
The ketos’ front flank is raised with movement; its legs bend at the knee and its face is strained and alert. The beast’s rear tail is lowered and its forked flipper wraps in on itself in a tightly wound curl. The entire piece rests upon a large stand that is molded into the work itself
