Greek Red Figure Oinochoe Painted with a Face

Description
Description

Oinochai are a particularly styled wine jug made of pottery. This oinochoe’s surface is beautifully painted with sensuous lines and a pensive portrait in silhouette. The widely looped handle connects where the neck has been crafted into a unique opening of the mouth, a design this is both subtle and purposeful.

We might imagine an intimate setting for this vessel, pouring rich Greek wine in equally ancient glasses. This piece dates from 330 B.C.E. – 63 B.C.E. and is 20 cm in height and is in excellent condition, its paint still bold with bright whites and crisp blacks laid by the hand of a nameless Greek potter.
