Glass Jug with Wide Strap Handle

Category:
Description
Description

At first glance, this glass jug looks almost contemporary in its design. The jug’s body tapers ever so slightly from top to base, while the short neck flares to a large mouth. The wide strap handle that bridges the gap of the mouth to the body’s top edge is heavily ribbed for a lavish touch of texture on the jug’s otherwise smooth profile.

This piece dates from just after the Roman Empire’s apex of power and influence. Its modest size suggests it was used most likely for the ointments or unguents commonly used by Ancient Rome’s citizens.
