Large Ancient Greek Silver Tetradrachm of Alexander the Great Set in 14K Gold
An impressive large ancient Greek silver tetradrachm issued in the name of Alexander the Great (336–323 B.C.), King of Macedonia and one of history’s most celebrated conquerors. Beautifully mounted in a polished 14-karat gold pendant, this remarkable coin exemplifies the artistic excellence and historical grandeur of ancient Greek coinage.
The obverse features a magnificent portrait of Heracles (Hercules), the legendary Greek hero, facing right and wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, whose formidable strength he overcame in the first of his twelve labors. The powerful facial features, deeply sculpted curls, and expressive classical profile reflect the exceptional artistry of Hellenistic coin engraving. Heracles was closely associated with the Macedonian royal dynasty, which claimed descent from the mythical hero.
The reverse depicts Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, seated upon a throne, holding an eagle in his outstretched right hand and a royal sceptre in his left. The Greek inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, meaning “Of Alexander,” identifies the royal authority under which the coin type was issued. Additional symbols and control marks reflect the administrative practices of the ancient Macedonian mints.
The coin displays bold sculptural relief, beautifully defined classical imagery, and attractive natural silver toning. Its substantial size and elegant 14-karat gold setting create a distinguished combination of ancient numismatic artistry and contemporary fine jewelry.
A magnificent example of Hellenistic craftsmanship, preserving the enduring legacy of Alexander the Great and the extraordinary cultural influence of his empire across the ancient world.
