Mycenaean Greece takes its name from the classical site of Mycenae in southern Greece and spanned the centuries of 1900 B.C.E. to 1100 B.C.E.. The Mycenaean period is defined as the historical setting of much ancient Greek literature and myth, including the Odyssey and the Iliad. This ceramic pyxis is a relic of that ancient culture and was possibly used to store the fragrant oils or ointments spotted on the necks and arms of men and women alike.
The styled lines on the upper half of this pyxis’ body show the attention given to decoration and design on such a simple container such as this.
