Byzantine Ceramic Flask

Description
Description

This relatively simple flask bears the skill of its creator not only in its perfectly shaped body, but also in the base’s striking designs that cause our eyes to linger and marvel at this ancient ochre flask. Four wide leaves are set at an angle to a cross, instantly recognizable now, as it would have been during the years in which this piece was made, approximately 500 C.E. – 600 C.E..

The flask’s smooth edges and thin body complement the image on the base’s front face. This piece stands approximately 16 cm in height and is in excellent condition. The mysterious designs still show the meticulous work needed to create such an objet, and this piece represents the fusion of art into the everyday throughout the ancient Byzantine Empire.
