{"id":476,"date":"2015-03-13T20:51:35","date_gmt":"2015-03-13T20:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/?p=476"},"modified":"2015-03-13T20:51:35","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T20:51:35","slug":"womens-history-month-female-pioneers-archeology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/womens-history-month-female-pioneers-archeology\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s History Month: Female Pioneers in Archeology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of Women&#8217;s History Month, we&#8217;d like to honor\u00a0the women of our past who&#8217;ve helped us to uncover\u00a0history and who devoted their lives to the knowledge and education.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-480\" src=\"http:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gerty_tent.jpg\" alt=\"gertrude bell\" width=\"283\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gerty_tent.jpg 370w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gerty_tent-300x288.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/>Gertrude Bell (1868-1926)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also known as the &#8220;Mother of Mesopotamian Archaeology,&#8221; Gertrude Bell was known for incredible achievements in excavation, during a time when men dominated the Mesopotamian excavations.\u00a0After completing her degree in Modern History from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, she excavated sites such as the Abbasid Palace of Ukhaidir, Iraq, Byzantine monuments in Syria, and Birbinkilise, Turkey. But archeology wasn&#8217;t her only noted attribute; Bell was a writer,\u00a0administrator and political officer, travelling extensively in Greater Syria, Arabia, Asia Minor and Mesopotamia. From WWI until the time of her death, Bell was the only woman holding political power, and she was highly influential to British imperial policy-making.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harriet Boyd Hawes (1871-1945)<\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-481\" src=\"http:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BoydHawes.jpg\" alt=\"BoydHawes\" width=\"283\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BoydHawes.jpg 425w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/BoydHawes-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harriet Boyd Hawes was a pioneering American archaeologist, who majored in Classics and was fluent in Greek. She split her time between teaching Greek Archeology at\u00a0Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and out in world, excavating. Hawes lived on the edge, riding around Crete on mule-back,\u00a0often alone or with a female companion into dangerous territories looking for prehistoric sites.\u00a0Hawes is responsible for\u00a0discovering the Bronze Age site of Gournia- the first Minoan town site ever unearthed. She spent three seasons excavating the site and became the first woman to direct a major field project in Greece, supervising over 100 men!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-487\" src=\"http:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/5001_13_fonds_scsm_bte71_5432.3_lee_miller_garrod.jpg\" alt=\"dorothy garrod\" width=\"283\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/5001_13_fonds_scsm_bte71_5432.3_lee_miller_garrod.jpg 1549w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/5001_13_fonds_scsm_bte71_5432.3_lee_miller_garrod-257x300.jpg 257w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/5001_13_fonds_scsm_bte71_5432.3_lee_miller_garrod-877x1024.jpg 877w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/5001_13_fonds_scsm_bte71_5432.3_lee_miller_garrod-900x1049.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/>Dorothy Garrod (1892-1968)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Annie Elizabeth Garrod was a British archaeologist and the daughter of the famous English physician, Sir Archibald Edward Garrod.\u00a0A major accomplishment was her\u00a0evidence of\u00a0occupation from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Mesolithic. The fossil human remains unearthed have become invaluable to the understanding of the relationship between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens.\u00a0By 1937 she became the first female professor in any subject at Cambridge, and probably the first recognized female prehistorian in the world in a professional status.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-488\" src=\"http:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Art-17_FOX-MS-p.119-Alice-Kober-1946-e1368454777170.jpg\" alt=\"alice kober\" width=\"283\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Art-17_FOX-MS-p.119-Alice-Kober-1946-e1368454777170.jpg 332w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Art-17_FOX-MS-p.119-Alice-Kober-1946-e1368454777170-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/>Alice Kober (1906-1950)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alice Kober was a brilliant American classical scholar and archaeologist, whose groundbreaking work helped build the decipherment of Linear B script. It had 90 distinct characters that indicated a syllabary writing system. Many scholars had studied the symbols, almost from the time they were discovered &#8211; a few revealed some success, but nothing of distinction. Kober set herself to work without the use of modern-day computers, applied a system through memory alone.\u00a0She filled over 186,000 notecards with information about occurrences within the 90 characters of the Linear B script. Sadly,\u00a0Kober died two yeas before the full decipherment of Linear B.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-489\" src=\"http:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mary-leakey.jpg\" alt=\"mary-leakey\" width=\"283\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mary-leakey.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mary-leakey-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mary-leakey-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mary-leakey-144x144.jpg 144w, https:\/\/baidun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mary-leakey-900x899.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/>Mary Leakey (1913-1996)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mary Leaky was known as the \u2018cigar-smoking, whisky-drinking\u2019 British archaeologist and anthropologist.\u00a0In 1959 Mary excavated the skull of an adult australopithecine (bipedal and dentally similar to humans), Zinjanthropus boisei, which was dated to 1.79 million years ago. After her husband&#8217;s death, Mary went became a leading palaeoanthropologist.
